What HUD announced
On September 24, 2026, HUD announced nine recent charges of discrimination under the Fair Housing Act. HUD reported that four involved alleged familial-status discrimination, three involved alleged disability discrimination, and one involved alleged sexual harassment.
A charge is not a final finding
A HUD charge means the agency has moved an enforcement matter forward; it is not the same as a final court judgment establishing liability. The underlying respondents may contest the allegations.
Federal protected categories remain important
The Fair Housing Act prohibits covered housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability. State and local laws can protect additional classes.
If discrimination may be happening now
- Preserve advertisements, applications, notices, emails, texts, voicemails, and witness information.
- Document accommodation requests and responses.
- Record exact discriminatory statements rather than summaries.
- Check HUD and state/local filing deadlines promptly.
