Warning Signs

Unfamiliar accounts or tradelines on your credit report
Inquiries you did not initiate
Addresses you never used appearing on your report
Employers you do not recognize
Collections for accounts you never opened
Bills for services you did not receive
Unexpected authentication or security alerts
Tax or benefit notices that do not match your records
Utility or phone accounts you did not open
Mixed-file concerns (another person's information merged with yours)

Immediate Steps

  1. 1Secure affected accounts — change compromised passwords immediately
  2. 2Enable multi-factor authentication where available
  3. 3Review all three credit reports (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion)
  4. 4Consider placing a credit freeze with each bureau
  5. 5Consider placing a fraud alert with at least one bureau
  6. 6Preserve all letters, screenshots, and communications as evidence
  7. 7Document dates, times, and contacts for every interaction
  8. 8Use IdentityTheft.gov if you suspect genuine identity theft
  9. 9Contact affected businesses directly
  10. 10Review bank and card activity for unauthorized charges
  11. 11Consider whether a police report is needed based on your circumstances

Credit Freezes

A freeze restricts access to your credit report, making it harder for new accounts to be opened in your name. You must place a freeze with each bureau separately. Freezes are free.

Fraud Alerts

A fraud alert asks creditors to verify your identity before opening new accounts. Placing an alert with one bureau typically notifies the others. Alerts are free and last one year (extended alerts available for identity theft victims).

Official federal recovery gateway

Integrated Identity Theft Center

IdentityTheft.gov creates an FTC Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. With an account, consumers can track recovery steps and receive prefilled forms and letters.

The FTC does not resolve individual identity-theft reports. The report and recovery plan help consumers document the theft and use available recovery rights.

Direct Credit Bureau Protection Directory

A credit freeze is free, but it is not a one-click process. Complete identity verification and place a freeze separately with each nationwide credit bureau.

A freeze with one bureau does not freeze the other two. An initial fraud alert generally can be placed with one nationwide bureau, which must notify the others.
